Machinex doubles capacity at Quebec City MRF

THE MODERNIZING OF THE SORTING CENTER OF THE CITY OF QUEBEC ENABLE THEM TO DOUBLE ITS CAPACITY AND ITS EFFICIENCY

September 30, 2014 – In operation since last spring, the sorting center of the City of Québec has been significantly modernized in order to meet growing volumes of material to be processed. A close collaboration of stakeholders of the City of Quebec, of the operator Société VIA, and of the equipment manufacturer Machinex, has enabled implantation of a very optimal sorting center that allows a superior effectiveness and thus, highest profitability.

In a few short months of operation, the results are excellent; the system treats, as expected, 35 metric tons by hour and produces high quality materials. According to David Marcouiller, project manager at Machinex, «the first phase of modernization of this system had allowed them to double their capacity and effectiveness of the sorting center».

The glass is removed in the first steps of mechanical sorting with the OCC disc screen separator and the scalping screen, thereby preventing premature wear of equipment by glass attrition and decreases significantly contamination of fiber bales.

The MACH ballistic separator, placed towards the end of the system, has reduced considerably rejects besides increasing fibers material recovery rate.

The new system designed by Machinex includes also a feeding drum that allows the sorting line to have a constant material flow, a bag opener as well as an aspiration system of bags that enables a better management of those, disc separators to recycle newsprint as well as pre-sorting stations and quality control.

The City, as well as the operator of the sorting center have commented the project led by Machinex. «We are very pleased with the offer made by Machinex and with their support all along the way» mentionned M. Stephan Bugay, director of the Division of residual materials management of Public Works of the City of Quebec. On the operator’s side, M. Jean-Sébastien Daigle, vice-president of operations at Société VIA, comments : «We are highly satisfied of the whole project and the results are conclusive.»
