Driving Australia’s CDS Expansion
Victoria, Australia
In Progress
2025 Envirolys International Reach Award Winner
In 2023, Victoria launched its Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) to support Australia’s circular economy goals and achieve a recovery target above 80%. Re.Group, through its CDS division Return-It, partnered with Machinex to modernize the return experience using the MACH CountAIner™. Designed for high-speed bulk counting, the AI-powered system identifies and counts mixed containers without pre-sorting or barcode scanning, reducing wait times, improving operational flow, and delivering a faster, simpler return process while ensuring accurate redemption, compliance, and real-time transaction visibility.
Proven Performance & National Rollout
The first commercial installation in Melbourne quickly demonstrated the system’s reliability in real-world conditions:
- Peaks exceeding 23 containers per second
- Nearly 10 million containers processed (2025)
- 9,498 return sessions recorded
- Average 415 - 473 containers per transaction
- Approximately 52 sessions per day
- Cutting transaction times from up to 40 minutes to less than 5 minutes
As a result, Re.Group plans a national rollout of MACH CountAIner™ units being deployed across Australia, establishing the technology as a central pillar of the country’s modernized container deposit infrastructure.
