Driving Australia’s CDS Expansion

Victoria, Australia

2025 - 2027

2025 Envirolys International Reach Award Winner

In 2023, Victoria launched its Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) to support Australia’s circular economy goals and achieve a recovery target above 80%. Re.Group, through its CDS division Return-It, partnered with Machinex to modernize the return experience using the MACH CountAIner™. Designed for high-speed bulk counting, the AI-powered system identifies and counts mixed containers without pre-sorting or barcode scanning, reducing wait times, improving operational flow, and delivering a faster, simpler return process while ensuring accurate redemption, compliance, and real-time transaction visibility.

  • Driving Australia’s CDS Expansion

Proven Performance & National Rollout

The first commercial installation in Melbourne quickly demonstrated the system’s reliability in real-world conditions:

  • Peaks exceeding 23 containers per second
  • Nearly 10 million containers processed (2025)
  • 9,498 return sessions recorded
  • Average 415 - 473 containers per transaction
  • Approximately 52 sessions per day
  • Cutting transaction times from up to 40 minutes to less than 5 minutes

As a result, Re.Group plans a national rollout, with a goal of 100 MACH CountAIner™ units being deployed across Australia between 2025 and 2027, establishing the technology as a central pillar of the country’s modernized container deposit infrastructure.

The deployment of the MACH CountAIner™ is delivering measurable value across the stakeholder chain, from improved customer experience to increased operational efficiency. These tangible benefits are helping redefine how container deposit systems perform in real-world conditions.

By enabling faster returns, greater accessibility, and more reliable processing, the MACH CountAIner™ plays a key role in increasing consumer participation and recovery rates, while supporting the long-term evolution of deposit systems worldwide.

DRS Facility

Lightweight returnable beverage container conditioning facility – 24 TPH, 55,000 TPY

Sorel-Tracy, Canada

Completed in 2025

The conditioning center designed and built by Machinex for the Quebec Beverage Container Recovery Association (AQRCB)/Consignaction represents a first within Quebec’s modernized deposit return system. Located in Sorel-Tracy, this 67,000 sq. ft. facility was developed to support the increase in volumes resulting from the expansion of the deposit system and the addition of new container types, including plastic containers ranging from 100 mL to 2 L. Equipped with MACH Hyspec® optical sorters powered by Machinex artificial intelligence, the facility delivers accurate and efficient sorting of refundable containers while providing the flexibility needed to support the continued evolution of Quebec’s deposit system.

Equipment:

  • Back Scrapping Drum
  • Ferrous Magnets
  • Fines Screens Separators
  • Eddy current separators
  • 7 MACH Hyspec® Optical Sorters equipped with Artificial Intelligence
  • High-capacity II-Ram Balers

The facility enables the local packaging and transformation of a significant portion of beverage containers recovered in Quebec, contributing to the circular economy by treating recyclable materials as valuable resources. While certain materials such as aluminum are sent to specialized markets outside the province for recycling, the overall approach aims to maintain and diversify recovery channels, supporting both environmental goals and economic development.
