Primary solutions to extract organics from waste?

It all starts with the collection method. This includes source-separated organics (SSO), co-collection and mixed solid waste (MSW).

Source Separated Organics (SSO)

SSO is suitable for residential, commercial, and institutional settings.

Schools, restaurants, sports stadiums, large events are just a few examples of commercial and institutional settings. These places generate more tonnage, making the stops more sustainable for the hauler and the environment.

Moreover, managing waste from perempted products and expired assorted grocery items through SSO can be a significant contribution to sustainability efforts. These items, often prevalent in groceries, can be effectively handled, reducing overall waste and enhancing the recycling process.


Co-collection is best for urban and rural residential areas.

Bags of food waste, collected from garbage bins, are transported to a facility where they are separated from other materials using advanced technologies like our MACH Hyspec® optical sorter or our SamurAI® sorting robot.

These bags can then be processed through a range of systems to produce desired end products, such as compost or biopulp.

MSW is the most widespread collection method.

Due to the process of decomposition and waste management practices, organic materials tend to break down into smaller fractions. By extracting elements less than 2 inches in size from the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) stream, we can segregate the majority of the organic fraction and meet aggressive waste diversion targets.

The recovered organic materials can undergo additional treatment processes, making them excellent feedstock for Anaerobic Digestion (AD) facilities or for soil revitalization purposes.

  • The anaerobic digestion (AD) treatment method for organic waste streams can be supplied in two different ways:

    The Dry AD process involves digesting organics in tunnels.

    The Wet AD system combines three process steps: the Pulper System, which is a water bath that separates heavy and light materials; the digester tank, where biogas can be captured; and the Press System, used to extract the biofertilizer.

  • Machinex stands as one of the pioneers in employing a unique and innovative method for drying organic materials. This process greatly facilitates the removal of contaminants, resulting in the production of high-quality RDF.

  • The refining process provided by Machinex ensures the extraction of valuable material while removing contaminants.

    This enables our customers to produce high-quality compost for resale, whether the material comes from source-separated organics (SSO), a composting facility, or the digestate from dry AD.

    Rotating trommels, compost fine screens, magnets, air separators, hard particle separators, bag openers and conveyors are among the equipment used in our organics refining back-end systems.

Using a high-speed hyperspectral detection system, the MACH Hyspec® can sort different types of material within a single-stream recycling system, such as plastics (PET, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP, PS, etc.), metal, and fiber products. Processing a high volume of material with great efficiency, this technology allows for a significant reduction in labor costs.

SamurAI™ – Sorting Robots

This adaptive sorting robot employs superior artificial intelligence technology to identify materials for accurate, positive product recovery or precise quality control within a single-stream recycling process. It is a great investment for MRF operators as they not only reduce the amount of labor that is needed, but also helps to manage labor safety and HR costs.

MACH Trommels are a key component of modern recycling facilities around the world. Dependable and effective, this machine designed by Machinex can sort various types of materials for all sorting streams (Single-Stream, Municipal Solid Waste, Construction & Demolition, etc.).

Positioned strategically within a system, it separates material flow to the desired fraction size. The effective inside diameter and screen plate opening size will vary according to customers’ needs and applications. Depending on the application, it may also be provided with knives inside to open the plastic bags.
